How to FREEZE panes to lock rows and columns in Excel or UN-FREEZE panes to un-lock rows/columns

Freezing is a helpful tip or out-of box option on Microsoft Excel to keep a certain area of a worksheet visible while you scroll to another area of the worksheet.

Steps to implement this:

  • Go to the VIEW tab

  • TO LOCK THE TOP ROW ONLY:

On the excel sheet, choose the VIEW tab, and then click FREEZE TOP ROW.

  • TO LOCK THE FIRST COLUMN ONLY:

Choose the VIEW tab, and then click FREEZE FIRST COLUMN.

  • To freeze MORE THAN ONE ROW OR ONE COLUMN, or to freeze BOTH ROWS AND COLUMNS AT THE SAME TIME:

Then go to VIEW tab, and then click FREEZE PANES. To achieve this you have to place your mouse cursor exactly on the cell and click that cell which is below the row and adjacent to the column for which you want to freeze the rows and columns.
